Red Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra)

Description: Medium-sized finch with distinctly crossed mandibles. No white wing bars.

Size: Length 6.25 in., Wingspan 11 in.

Notes: At least 8 "Types" of Red Crossbill exist in North America . Multiple types/subspecies occur in Newfoundland including the endangered "Newfoundland Red Crossbill" or percna subspecies (Type 8). While there are sometimes average size differences between types/subspecies, they are only reliably separated by spectral analysis of calls.
